Effective Reading Instruction in the Elementary School Setting : September Topic~ Phonemic Awareness

(Click on the Picture to read the first post in this series.)

Welcome everyone to this month's topic "Effective Reading Instruction in the Elementary School Setting : Phonemic Awareness." Phonemic awareness is a subset of phonological awareness. Phonemic awareness is a child's ability to identify, isolate, and manipulate individual sounds of oral language. In this stage, a child is able to hear and learns to identify a given sound in a spoken word.

For example:

"What is the beginning sound in the word ---?"

"What sound do you hear at the end of ---?"

In addition, children learn how to segment and blend sounds with phonemic awareness lessons. Throughout this month, I am going to post activities the will help support the teaching of phonemic awareness.

Below are activities to use with phonemic awareness lessons:

Reading Rockets

This is a great website that is full of information and reading activities.

( I do not own these videos. These YouTube video have ads before the video begins.)
