A Game of Tic Tac Toe Anyone?

I truly believe that students learn best when they are having fun. So why not incorporate a little reading with a game of Tic Tac Toe?
To play this game, first students will place the Tic Tac Toe mat in the center of Player 1 and Player 2. Just like the traditional game, players must decide who will play with the X cards and O cards. Next, shuffle the CVC word cards and place one card (face down) in each of the nine places on the game mat.  Player 1 will turn one of the CVC word cards over. If Player 1 reads the word correctly he/she may place the X or O card on that space. Then Player 2 will do the same. The first player to get three Xs or Os in a row wins!
Playing  a simple childhood favorite game with students can have a two fold effect, students are actively engaged in their learning while having fun!
I have made two Tic Tac Toe games for reading CVC words and CVC &CVCe words. You can check them out on my Teachers Notebook Shop Page.

Word Building Strategy for Beginning Readers

Materials for this activity:
Letter cards
Real or Made Up Words chart

This strategy will help students develop the skills of segmenting and blending sounds, thus assisting them in read words. First, give the student two letter cards such as a  and t. Allow the child to build the word at. Then guide the student to add another letter to at. For example, ask the student “What word would we create if we added the letter m to the beginning of the word at?” --mat Then ask “ Is mat a real word or a made up/nonsense  word?” Have students record the word to the “Real or Nonsense Words” chart. Continue changing the beginning letter sound to allow the child practice building new words.
Possible words to create:
Read words
at             bat           cat           hat           sat           mat          fat
rat           nat           pat
Nonsense or Made Up words
tat           vat           wat          xat           lat            jat           gat
dat           yat           zat

Let's Go Fish!

Do you remember playing this enjoyable game as a child? I sure do! I can recall sitting around the kitchen table playing for what seemed like hours with my brother and mom. With this wonderful childhood memory, I thought what a cool way to get my students to learn the sight words.

I created a Let’s Go Fish game for all of the Dolch Vocabulary Words. Each game has Go Fish playing cards, student recording sheet, and a Teacher Pre- and Post- Assessment Chart.  If you need more than one Dolch word list, as I do, I tried to make a convenient want to keep the games separated by color coding the Dolch words.

Color of Words for Each Game:
Pre-primer -- orange
Primer -- black
1st grade – red
2nd grade— green
3rd grade—purple

You can review these fun games by clicking on the pictures.
